What is a Sacred Mother Blessing?
The mother blessing or blessingway ceremony originated from the American Indian Navajo tradition. A mother blessing ceremony creates sacred space and a safe environment and is special time in the pregnancy journey where she is surrounded by her tribe which is often the most important people in her life. In this sacred space she gains a sense of power, confidence and support that will help her rise to motherhood.
Our modern culture has become preoccupied with the ‘baby shower’ which focuses on the baby and other material gifts for the baby and we forget about the deep journey the mother to be is about to take to bring her baby earthside. A mother blessing helps the woman to mentally, emotionally and spiritually give prepare for the work of birthing and it opens her to her instinctive abilities which will guide her through this important rite of passage.
The mother blessings I facilitate are a combination of many years of experience and my spriritual guided practice.
What happens during the Mother Blessing?
The mother blessing generally follows the following stages; beginning, shifting, focusing, completing and feasting. Each mother blessing is bespoke to the mother to be and her wishes. Much of the ceremony is not known to the mother to be or the guests until the day.
As this is a rite of passage, the ceremony is deeply spiritual. You need not follow any religion, this ceremony focuses on our existence within the elements, we call in the four cardinal directions as a means of setting sacred space. each of the directions has a realm of influence to colour, seasons, time of day/life etc.
The ceremony is deeply moving on all levels and there are a number of conscious crafting activities that we participate in such as: consciously crafting an affirmation flag/bunting or sacred motherhood mala as an alternative, birth bead bracelet, flower crown, adorning with an anointing oil and cocooning ceremony and you may wish to apply henna* to adorn yourself. This is in addition to all the beautiful contributions the guests will be requested to be involved with.
*can be included for an additional cost.
